Carol Foley

As a single mum of three children, aged from seven to 18 years old, Carol Foley, 45, came to White Lion Training in Corby, Northamptonshire, in October 2005, so she could improve her employment prospects and support her family.
Carol said:
“I didn’t like school but as I grew older and had my own children I realised I had missed an opportunity to benefit from learning.”
“My local Jobcentre set me up with the White Lion Training centre in Corby. I was really nervous at first. It took me twenty minutes just to get through the door! But when I got going I actually found it easier than I’d thought I would. My tutors encouraged me to succeed but without being pushy and I found the whole experience really positive. I completed my adult literacy Level 2 qualification within just 2 weeks and then went on to complete further IT courses.”
“My kids have been really supportive. They are pleased to see that mum’s gone back to school! Wesley, my oldest son, is off to University soon and it’s been really encouraging to see him achieve while I’ve been learning too.”
Whilst learning at White Lion Training, Carol’s skills and dedication were recognised by staff at the centre and she was offered a role as a tutor which she accepted.
Her nominator, centre manager Paula Franks, added:
“I’ve seen a real transformation in Carol, and she is now a confident, well-qualified tutor with a bright career ahead of her.”
In October 2008 Carol was awarded the national Progression Award, sponsored by OCR, at the learndirect Achievement Awards ceremony. The award recognises learners who have undertaken learndirect learning in order to return to work.
On winning her award, Carol said:
“learndirect has helped me get a lot more confidence and a job that I really love. It’s amazing to think that I walked through the door a learner and now I’m a tutor for people just like me! I would encourage everyone to take the first step and start learning.”
